If you’ve been absolutely horrified by hearing about the antics of Donald Trump during the NATO summit, just imagine how horrified the people who actually have to work with him are.
While many world leaders have come to expect outlandish behavior from Trump, it certainly doesn’t get any easier or less shocking to know that this behavior is coming from a 72-year-old man and the President of the United States.
It turns out, European diplomats have been stunned by the many ridiculous rants that Trump has rambled on about Germany and other NATO allies during the summit. A European official has relayed some of the reactions of the allies to Axios’ Jonathan Swan and it should make America more ashamed than the country has ever been. The official stated that the allies have been left speechless, unsure of how to react to Trump’s lies and his insistence that NATO alliance members must double their contributions to defense by 2024. The official said the allies are treating Trump like “the old uncle” who “gets nuts”:
“Usual Trump: a stream of incoherent sentences. The allies looked the other way as when the old uncle gets nuts.”
Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of other world leaders to overcompensate for Trump, the official stated that the NATO summit went “the best it could be considering the person” who is running America and doing his best to screw everything up.
Swan also wrote that Trump’s lies about him forcing NATO allies to increase their defense spending after they’d already agreed to it years ago left the European allies “spinning.” He reported:
“Nobody agreed to spend more than the previously agreed-upon 2 percent target. Following Trump’s remarks, French President Macron reiterated that the NATO members only agreed to the spending levels they’d previously agreed to in 2014.”
If this doesn’t make every Trump supporter and voter feel extremely ashamed of their POTUS, I don’t know what will.
