Like many things that have happened in Donald Trump’s presidency, the Federal government is about to miss yet another important deadline — and the president could not care less. Not even when it concerns thousands of children.
Trump is likely going to miss today’s court-imposed deadline in which he is supposed to reunite the migrant families that were torn apart by his inhumane “zero tolerance” policy. It’s a matter that has earned him loads of criticism, but his response shows that he isn’t even bothered. Instead, he’s blaming these helpless families.
In speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing for the NATO summit in Brussels, Trump spoke against illegal immigration when reporters grilled him on missing the deadline. Trump said:
“I have a solution. Tell people not to come to our country illegally. That’s the solution. Don’t come to our country illegally. Come like other people do, come legally. I’m saying this, very simply. We have laws. We have borders. Don’t come to our country illegally. It’s not a good thing.”
Ironic, to say the least, when his administration has been caught trying to take away citizenship from people who did exactly that, all because they don’t want to do the paperwork involved in allowing those people to live their lives as Americans.
Then, Trump went off on his usual fear-mongering talking points, defending ICE while spewing nonsense about MS-13, and accusing Democrats of wanting open borders (which isn’t even true). Trump said:
“Democrats want open borders and they don’t mind crime. We want no crime and we want borders where borders mean something. All right? And, remember this, without borders, you do not have a country.”
You can watch Trump’s dismissal of the struggling, terrified migrant families below:
The president’s entire handling of what has happened to families at the southern border has been disgusting and insensitive at best. It was a major human rights violation, and something that many of us are shocked could happen in a place like America in 2018. America has entered a dark period in human history, and other countries will never look at us the same.
