The free press has just sent a brutal message to Donald Trump, and he isn’t going to like it. After enduring endless attacks and threats from the President of the United States, the mainstream media has had enough and is hitting Trump where it’s going to hurt — his ego and desperate need for attention.
A growing number of media sources are joining forces in their refusal to cover Trump’s rallies, as Trump’s incoherent, lie-infused rants are no longer considered to be newsworthy. We can’t blame news sources for wanting to focus on more important things, as the president rarely speaks about things that are critical (or true) in front of his followers. Instead, Trump’s rallies are mostly speeches in which he attacks the media and his opponents, hypes up his minions, and brags about himself. No one needs to see that.
Recently, Vox’s Ezra Klein and CNN’s Brian Stelter talked about the media’s pushback on Reliable Sources. Bringing up several of Trump’s brutal attacks on prominent members of Congress, Klein said:
“Yes, it is all shocking and childish and immature and petulant and cruel. John McCain is dying. But — but he’s been doing this for years. There’s nothing new here. There’s nothing new in him calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas,’ nothing new in him attacking John McCain, nothing new in him attacking the Bushes. And yet whenever Donald Trump wants to change a subject, he sets up a rally and goes and says a bunch of crazy stuff. I wonder at this point what information is being encoded in that.”
You can watch the discussion below:
As much of Trump’s outlandish behavior and meltdowns can hardly be considered “news” at this point, the media is grappling with how much of this circus should actually be reported on. While much of the president’s unhinged actions and attacks do have serious consequences (especially when directed at other world leaders), a good portion of what Trump does is just meaningless noise and we would all be better off without it.
The media seems to be reaching a consensus: As far as Trump and his rallies are concerned, the president’s ramblings should not be considered newsworthy by any means. This will surely cause Trump to melt down as his rallies and “huge” crowd sizes slowly disappear from media networks. Soon, only Fox News will be reporting on Trump’s pathetic, racist, family get-togethers.
